Understanding MummyMOT

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment recommended for all women following delivery whether 6 weeks or many years after.

The Pelvic Health Studio London is home to Mummy MOT® HQ – our founder Maria Elliott also founded Mummy MOT®. Already part of every new mother’s standard postnatal rehabilitation in France, Maria created the Mummy MOT after her own experience of giving birth to her eldest daughter whilst based in France.

The Mummy MOT is a postnatal check that examines the pelvic floor (internal and external) pelvic alignment, musculoskeletal health and diastasis recti. This postnatal assessment can help to identify, assess and manage any postnatal pelvic health conditions.

Your Mummy MOT will be conducted by a specialist women’s health physiotherapist or osteopath. Based on your initial assessment, you will be given a bespoke postnatal recovery plan devised especially for you, your lifestyle and fitness goals, including specific and safe postnatal exercises to get you back to feeling your best self.

  • 1-hour postnatal assessment with a specialist women’s health practitioner
  • In-depth check of pelvic floor strength and tummy gap
  • Assessment of any physical problems arising from pregnancy and birth
  • A bespoke postnatal recovery programme devised especially for you, your lifestyle and your fitness goals. This includes specific and safe post-natal exercises to improve stability, posture and core strength.

After having a baby, half of all women have a weakness in either their tummy or pelvic floor area, while over a third suffer from complex pelvic pain. This can create instability and weak core strength and results in altered transfer load, back pain, pelvic pain, and bladder and bowel weakness. A Mummy MOT helps women avoid these distressing and often embarrassing symptoms.

What is a Mummy MOT?

A Mummy MOT is a specialist one-hour postnatal assessment that examines your pelvic floor (internal and external), pelvic alignment, musculoskeletal health and any abdominal separation (diastasis recti). It is carried out by a specialist women’s health physiotherapist or osteopath, and results in a bespoke postnatal recovery programme tailored to your lifestyle and fitness goals.

A Mummy MOT is recommended from around 6 weeks postnatally, but it is never too late — whether you gave birth 6 weeks or many years ago, the assessment can identify and help resolve postnatal issues. The check is recommended for all women following delivery, regardless of whether you have symptoms.

Yes. A Mummy MOT is recommended after any type of delivery, including caesarean. Pregnancy itself places significant strain on your pelvic floor, abdominal wall and posture, so the same assessment applies. We also offer specific C-section scar therapy as part of the recovery plan if required.

Your one-hour appointment includes: a full postnatal assessment with a specialist women’s health practitioner, an in-depth check of pelvic floor strength and abdominal separation (tummy gap), an assessment of physical problems arising from pregnancy and birth, and a personalised postnatal recovery programme with safe exercises to improve stability, posture and core strength.

After having a baby, around half of all women have weakness in either the tummy or pelvic floor area, and over a third experience complex pelvic pain. This can cause instability, weak core strength, back pain, pelvic pain, and bladder and bowel weakness. A Mummy MOT helps identify and treat these issues early so they don’t become long-term problems.

The Mummy MOT was founded by Maria Elliott, who developed it after her own postnatal experience while based in France, where postnatal rehabilitation is part of every new mother’s standard care. MEPS is home to Mummy MOT® HQ, and the assessment is now delivered by certified practitioners across the UK and internationally.
